After turning my father over to his jailers, the Sonoma County team returned to their desks to finish their reports. Emotionally exhausted, they were grateful for the congratulations cards that awaited them in their office, including one from the district attorney’s office and another from the kids at the Dunbar school, thanking them for “making us feel safe again.”

Inviting Arturo Zorrilla to join them, the team then decided to get a drink in downtown Santa Rosa. As they headed out the door, Brown saw Randi Rossmann standing nearby. He didn’t think much of the rest of the media, which had treated the murders and investigation like a circus. But most of the Press Democrat reporters, like Chris Smith and particularly Rossmann, had done their jobs professionally and with sensitivity. She had asked tough questions and worked twelve- to fourteen-hour days to keep ahead of breaking news, but that was her job, and they could respect that.

Brown asked the others if they minded bringing Rossmann along. When no one objected, the reporter found herself sitting in a crowded restaurant booth with six drained but happy detectives. As the beer flowed and the stories poured out of the men, she was impressed by how each of them had supplied his piece to the puzzle. A real team, she thought.

The party was winding down when Dave Sederholm raised his glass. “We did it for Carmina,” he said.

Mike Brown’s mind flashed back to the sight of a surgeon with his fingers in my throat. “We couldn’t do it for the others,” he agreed, “so we did it for Carmina.”
